ASSAf Hosts Inaugural Annual Lecture on Women in STEMI

Breaking Barriers: Advancing Women in STEMI Across Africa

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), a proud IAP member, will host its first Annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) Lecture on 27 March 2025. This virtual event will feature Professor Catherine Ngila, a distinguished scientist and advocate for women in STEMI, who will speak on the topic:

'Women in STEMI: Achievements and Challenges, the African Perspective'

Professor Ngila is the Executive Director of the African Foundation for Women and Youth in Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI) and a leading figure in various international science organisations, including the United Nations University Council and the International Organisation for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD). With an extensive career in academia and research, she has mentored over 130 postgraduate students and published more than 600 academic works, particularly in environmental chemistry and water quality monitoring.

The ASSAf Annual STEMI Lecture aims to promote awareness of STEMI education, technological advancements, and the critical role of diversity and inclusion in scientific fields. This year’s lecture will highlight the gender disparities in science across Africa and the importance of fostering inclusive and supportive environments for women in STEMI. Ngila will discuss challenges faced by women and girls in science, as well as initiatives such as South Africa’s Women in Science Programmes and Awards (SAWiSA) that aim to inspire the next generation of female scientists.

This event is a key milestone in ASSAf’s commitment to knowledge-sharing, intellectual engagement, and the advancement of STEMI disciplines. As a member academy of IAP, ASSAf continues to champion initiatives that drive innovation, sustainable development, and gender equality in STEMI across Africa and beyond.
