Attend the workshop on Reforming Research Assessment

Policy for Science
The joint workshop will take place during the GYA Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists

From 7-10 May 2024, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) will host a joint workshop on “Reforming Research Assessment” in Washington, D.C., during the Global Young Academy (GYA) Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists.

Distinguished early- to mid-career scientists and scholars from around the world will convene in Washington, D.C., for the GYA’s 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference, which this year features a joint GYA/CoARA event “Reforming Research Assessment to Foster an Open and Socially Responsive Research Culture”.

The workshop event, which is part of the CoARA Boost project, will take place from 13:00 - 15:00 (UTC -4) on 6 May and will examine current research assessment practices that perpetuate a “publish or perish” culture, prioritise quantity over quality, and reward prestige over integrity. Discussants will explore efforts such as the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), the Latin American Forum on Research Assessment (FOLEC-CLACSO), and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), all of which seek reform by promoting openness, integrity, and equity.

All AGM workshops are side events organised by GYA Working Groups in collaboration with partner organisations, and will be held at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine building on 2101 Constitution Avenue, Washington, D.C.

The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), The Global Young Academy (GYA) and the International Science Council (ISC) conducted a review of current research evaluation systems. This included an examination of recent actions, responses, and initiatives undertaken by various stakeholders, with the goal to contribute to ongoing debates and address open questions regarding the future of research evaluation, and resulted in a report titled The Future of Research Evaluation: A Synthesis of Current Debates and Developments. Subsequently, the team undertook a survey of and engagement with their membership to get a better idea of specific issues faced by their members, and where the levers for change might be. 'The Future of Research Evaluation' is available here.

The aim of this workshop is to take stock of the current work, contextualized in a rapidly evolving academic and technological environment, and chart a way forward for the project that will bring maximum value to members of GYA, IAP and ISC.
