The Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) recently announced that one of its Curriculum Developers, Heidi Gibson, has authored a book called, 'From Ideas to Action: Transforming Learning to Inspire Action on Critical Global Issues', which is now published online through the Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press (SISP). The volume is open access and available to read and download, at no cost, from SISP's portal on the Figshare platform and is available in print as well through SISP.
As highlighted by Carol O’Donnell, SSEC Director and Member of the IAP Science Education Programme (SEP) Global Council, in the book's foreword,
Young people face a world with problems that require broad collaboration and innovation to ensure a positive future for everyone. Giving young people the tools to help build this future is essential. This book will help educators give young people the experiences that will enable the development of these tools.
The work detailed in this book is foundational to the Smithsonian Science for Global Goals community research guides. Gibson articulates a framework that young people can follow to build their sustainability mindsets, the skills they need to successfully engage in the work of transforming their communities.
You can find the book in the publications section of the IAP website as well.
