Insightful presentations from the “Young Scientists and the Future of Science in the G20” seminar, categorized by topic, have now been made available on the IAP YouTube channel. Hosted by the Brazil National Academy of Medicine (ANM) in Rio de Janeiro on 3 July 2024, this event gathered prominent young scientists, Brazilian and international experts and esteemed figures such as Nobel laureate Richard Roberts and former Central Bank of Brazil President Arminio Fraga, and professor Viviane Naimy remotely from Lebanon, on Humanizing Business Education. The opening presentation to this G20 meeting was provided by Gustavo Gameiro, from ANM Brazil.
The seminar, organized by Instituto Coalizão Saúde (ICOS) and the ANM, served as a forum to empower the next generation of scientists by providing a platform to share groundbreaking ideas and strategies for tackling global challenges. The hybrid event was a key initiative within the G20 framework, aiming to inspire new solutions for issues such as global health, AI-driven medical advancements, sustainable development and gender equity in science.

The event included 15 panels covering topics like 'Science Diplomacy' and 'AI for Tuberculosis Detection', which featured distinguished speakers like Dr. Mayra Silva from NOSi in Cape Verde and Dr. Ashwin Parchani from India. Additional sessions celebrated women’s contributions to science, with renowned leaders like Helena Nader and Margareth Dalcolmo addressing challenges in medical education and the importance of effective science communication.
One of the most anticipated presentations was the closing 'Masterclass for Young Scientists', delivered by Nobel Prize winner Richard Roberts, who shared his scientific journey and emphasized the essential role of women in science. This and other memorable moments, including discussions led by Arminio Fraga on health as a driving force for job creation and technological innovation, are now accessible on IAP’s YouTube channel for wider public engagement.
"One of the reasons that I travel is to meet young scientists, because it is the young scientists who are the future of this world. We're very lucky that Gustavo decided that he was going to be an activist and really do something to improve Brazil, to improve the world, to improve medicine, and I look to him as a wonderful inspiration for many other young scientists.
It is very important not to sit back and let people walk all over you. You have to stand up, say what you think, and make sure that the old people stand aside when they get in the way. I'm very happy to be here.” (Richard Roberts)
