The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) invites researchers, policymakers and academic professionals to join a timely and critical webinar, Combatting Predatory Academic Journals and Conferences: The Role of Stakeholders in the Global Fight, taking place on Monday, 4 November 2024, from 13.00 to 14.30 UTC (08.00-09.30 EST). Hosted on Zoom, this 90-minute webinar aims to illuminate the roles of various stakeholders in addressing predatory academic practices and will offer actionable insights for participants.
This session builds on IAP’s 2022 report, Combatting Predatory Academic Journals and Conferences, which identified root causes of predatory practices, assessed their impact and outlined recommendations for systemic action. Recognizing the essential role of academic integrity in maintaining research quality, IAP awarded the RESCUE consortium in 2023—a collaborative initiative by the Benin Young Academy of Science, Czech Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Young Academy of Science—to drive reforms targeting specific stakeholder groups. RESCUE (Roadmap to Improve Ethics in Science and Curb Predatory Publishing) emphasizes the role of librarians, higher education institutions and policymakers in this global initiative, both independently and with the support of the academic community.
This event will feature esteemed speakers contributing perspectives and best practices from diverse regions:
Kutubuddin Molla is a Senior Scientist at the National Rice Research Institute in India, known for his expertise in genome editing for crop improvement. A member of the Indian National Young Academy of Sciences, Dr. Molla leads the RESCUE consortium, with a mission to advance ethical practices in academic publishing.
Tereza Simova is an Open Science advocate and founder of the Stop Predatory Practices initiative. With roles in research management and policy, she is committed to training early career researchers in ethical publishing and supports the Open Science movement to curb predatory practices globally.
Victorien Dougnon is an Associate Professor of Microbiology at the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin. Renowned for his work on antimicrobial resistance and the pharmacological properties of African medicinal plants, Dr. Dougnon also leads the Young Scientists Academy of Benin, promoting research excellence and innovation across West Africa.
