IPBES Calls for Nominations of Fellows for Biodiversity Planning Assessment

Policy for Science
For fellows for the methodological assessment of integrated biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning and ecological connectivity

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is inviting nominations for fellows to participate in its upcoming assessment on integrated biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning and ecological connectivity. This "spatial planning assessment" will explore methods to effectively use land, inland waters and sea areas to protect and sustain biodiversity, while balancing human needs and ecological conservation.

Opportunity for Early-Career Professionals

IPBES is seeking early-career professionals from a variety of fields, including geography, ecology, conservation, urban planning, law, economics and more. Selected fellows will have the opportunity to contribute to the assessment, gain experience in IPBES processes, attend author meetings, receive training and be paired with a mentor. This is a unique opportunity to engage in high-level international work at the intersection of science and policy.

Who Should Apply?

Fellows are expected to have expertise in areas such as spatial planning, biodiversity conservation, environmental impact assessment and ecological restoration, among others. Nominees should also have experience in participatory approaches to planning, particularly those involving Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

How to Apply

Governments, organizations and other stakeholders are encouraged to nominate suitable candidates for the fellowship program. The application form is available on the IPBES website here and must be completed in English. All applications are due by 10 January 2025, while nominating bodies must submit approved nominations by 24 January 2025.

Additional Details

Selected fellows must be available to attend author meetings and training sessions, with the first meeting scheduled for August 2025. Experts from developing countries will receive financial support for attending meetings, while those from developed countries must arrange their own funding.

A dialogue meeting to discuss the nomination process and required expertise is planned for November 2024. For more information, visit the IPBES Fellowship Program webpage.

IPBES encourages all stakeholders to disseminate this call widely and to ensure gender balance in their nominations.
