Nominate for the Royal Society's medals and awards

Nominations are now open for the Royal Society’s annual medals and awards programme.

The Royal Society invites all scientists to nominate exceptional individuals and teams for these accolades, and to encourage others within the scientific community to do the same. Royal Society medals and awards recognise those researchers who are making significant contributions to scientific progress in their fields. Twenty-eight medals and awards are open for nominations in this annual cycle, celebrating excellence across the biological, physical and applied sciences. Several medals are accompanied by prize lectures.

Nominations are particularly welcome when they recognise the achievements of individuals and teams from groups that are under-represented in science. The Society would also like to receive nominations from a broad range of academic institutions, career stages and industries. Nominations close on Friday 21 February 2025 and winners will be announced in the summer of 2025.

Royal Society medals and awards are awarded to scientists based in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth countries and wider international scientific community. Twenty-one medals and awards are open solely to scientists who are citizens of the UK, Republic of Ireland or Commonwealth countries, or those who have been residents in one of these countries for three or more years. Three premier medals are open to the entire international scientific community: the Copley Medal, Bakerian Medal and Croonian Medal.

The Africa Prize and Rising Star Africa Prize are open to exceptional individual scientists based in Africa, whose research is linked with an African university or research centre. The Milner Award is open to European citizens or those who have been residents in Europe for at least 12 months. You do not need to be a Fellow of the Royal Society to be nominated for an award. Most awards are open to nominations of scientists at any career stage, as well as team nominations.

The Royal Society is delighted to have added a new award to its annual medals and awards programme, to be awarded for the first time in the summer of 2025. The Royal Society Environment Medal and Lecture will be awarded to an individual or team for outstanding and sustained work in environmental science.
