IAP Young Physician Leaders (YPL) alumnus honoured for his impactful work in pulmonary medicine

Professor Rubeshan Perumal, a key member of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), has received the SAMRC Bronze Award from the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV research. This prestigious award highlights his significant role in shaping treatment strategies for these co-epidemics and his dedication to improving health systems in South Africa and beyond.

Perumal, a YPL alumnus, is an emerging leader in pulmonary medicine with an impressive academic background. Holding multiple degrees, including a PhD in medicine, he has authored over 70 high-impact publications. His research at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) has been instrumental in the development of integrated approaches for TB and HIV treatment, while also contributing to the National TB Think Tank. In addition to his research achievements, Perumal's leadership in the medical community has been recognised through his role in mentoring junior researchers and medical students at the University of Cape Town and through his contributions to the management of drug-resistant TB cases.
