IAP endorsed the Strategic Plan for the Implementation of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development

The plan was endorsed by the Executive Committee of the Science Decade in early September 2024

The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) is proud to announce its endorsement of the United Nations' strategic plan for the newly proclaimed International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033). The Decade, which was launched by the United Nations General Assembly on 25 August 2023, marks a global initiative led by UNESCO to harness the power of science in achieving sustainable development across the globe.

IAP, as a global network of some 150 national and regional academies, is committed to supporting this transformative initiative, which aims to leverage the full spectrum of scientific disciplines—basic, applied, social and human sciences—for addressing critical global challenges. These include climate change, biodiversity loss, sustainable resource management and socio-economic inequalities. The Decade follows the successful International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development and aims to expand its impact through multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving.

The strategic plan for the Decade, developed through consultations with Member States, UN agencies, the private sector and civil society organizations, outlines a shared vision for a sustainable future. It emphasizes the urgent need for sound policies, scientific research, and public support to steer the world back on track toward meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The Decade will focus on key areas such as the promotion of sustainable energy, climate resilience, and ecological innovation—all areas where IAP's network of experts will play a crucial role.

As part of this effort, IAP will work closely with UNESCO and other stakeholders to foster scientific literacy, advocate for evidence-based policymaking and promote international collaboration. By integrating insights from diverse scientific fields and promoting a new social contract between science and society, the Decade aims to rebuild trust in science and address the most pressing societal and environmental challenges of our time.
