Prof. Abeysekera is a graduate from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka with Honours degree in Chemistry and obtained his doctoral degree from the Queen’s University of Belfast, UK,  in 1977. He is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka.

Prof Abeysekera has been a post-doctoral fellow at the Queen’s University of Belfast and the University of Utrecht, Netherlands.  He was appointed a Fellow of NASSL in 1996. Prof Abeysekera has served as Director of the Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurveda Research institute, Sri Lanka and the Councils of the Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon and the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science.  He was President of Section E2 of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Research Advisory Board of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka.  He is the current Editor- in-Chief of the Journal of National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka.  Prof Abeysekera’s research interests are in the fields of physical organic chemistry and the standardization and the biological activities of herbal medicines.  He has been awarded a D.Sc. (honoris causa) by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
