Biography

Ion Tiginyanu graduated from Moscow Institute of Physics and Engineering in 1978. He received his Ph.D. degree in Semiconductor Physics from Lebedev Institute of Physics, Moscow, in 1982. He completed research projects at the Technical University Darmstadt, Germany as an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow (1995/96, 1998/99) and at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA (2000/2001).

From 1998 to 2004 he served as vice-rector of the Technical University of Moldova. In 2004 he was elected vice-president and in 2019 – president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova where he implemented communication platforms aiming at an efficient scientific dialogue within the academic community as well as between researchers and society.

Professor Tiginyanu’s research interests are related to nanotechnologies and materials science. He has more than 400 journal publications and 52 technological patents. He developed the surface charge lithography and hopping electrodeposition, and invented the first artificial material with dual hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties (called Aerogalnite). Tiginyanu got the ‘Outstanding Inventor’ Award from the World Intellectual Property Organization. He is member of the Academia Europaea and European Academy of Sciences and Arts, honorary member of the Romanian Academy, Fellow of the International Science Council etc.
