Biography

Prof. Grace Bantebya-Kyomuhendo is a Women and Gender Studies Professor, A Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, a distinguished social anthropologist, and a senior researcher advocating for gender equality and social transformation. She is a versatile Social Anthropologist with a wealth of experience in gender-focused research and evaluating multicountry development projects in the African region and beyond. She was contracted by Governments, Multilateral Agencies, Bilateral Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations and the private sector to design and evaluate the progress and impact of different country programmes. Prof. Bantebya is a senior consultant on gender and development issues on multicountry projects. The most recent work is “Transforming the Lives of Girls and Young Women in Uganda, Ethiopia, Viet Nam and Nepal. Strengthening Linkages Between Poverty Reduction Strategies and Child Protection Initiatives by both projects commissioned by the Overseas Development Institute (United Kingdom); Shame, Social Exclusion and the Effectiveness of Antipoverty Programmes supported by ESRC  and currently undertaking a follow-up project on “Does ‘shame-proofing’ antipoverty programmes improve their effectiveness:  Theory of change and impact policy evaluation in cross-national settings,  among others as detailed in the appended CV. She has published widely, including a book entitled “Women, Work and Domestic Virtue in Uganda”, which got an award from the African Studies Association and Elaine Chase and Bantebya Kyomuhendo 2014 The Shame of Poverty: Global Perspective Oxford University Press. Prof Bantebya is also a Fellow of the International Women’s Leadership Forum, an organization committed to promoting and supporting Women’s Leadership and governance. She is a member of several editorial boards both in Uganda and Abroad. Prof. Bantebya is the Principal Investigator (PI) on the “Whole University Approach: Kicking Sexual Harassment out of Higher Education Institutions in Uganda” (KISH Project).
