Biography

Saroj Jayasinghe, Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Founder Head, Department of Medical Humanities, University of Colombo, was a specialist in Internal Medicine at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka for almost 4 decades. He was a member of the Science Committee on Urban Health and Wellbeing: A Systems Approach (International Science Council) and works is a consultant to a newly formed Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physician (London), the Ceylon College of Physicians, and the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka. He led curriculum reforms in Sri Lanka and helped introduce topics on social determinants of health (SDH), behavioral sciences and medical humanities and was involved in policy advise from the 1990s, initially to the National Development Council, The Presidential Task Force on Health, and more recently on issues related to COVID. He is in the editorial boards of the Journal of Urban Health of the New York Academy of Sciences, the Ceylon Journal of Medical Sciences and BAU Journal: Health and Well-being. He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and current research interests include urban health, systems thinking in health, medical humanities and equity in health.
