The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and the Association of Academies and Societies of Science in Asia (AASSA) convened a symposium on "Science Policy Futures of Asia" from 1-3 September 2024 in New Delhi, India. Bringing together representatives from science academies across Asia and Oceania, the symposium addressed pressing scientific and policy challenges faced by the region, including climate change, technological advancements and demographic shifts. Participants from countries such as Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan collaborated to outline a shared vision for advancing science, technology and innovation (STI) in Asia.
Structured around five thematic sessions, the symposium emphasised fostering equitable infrastructure for research collaboration, enhancing researcher and student exchanges and integrating traditional knowledge with modern science. Discussions highlighted Asia’s immense potential to lead in global STI, proposing solutions for food security, environmental sustainability, genomic innovations and biodiversity conservation. The event reinforced the need for multilateral cooperation, inclusive growth and empowering young scientists as critical steps toward sustainable development. By bridging cultural heritage and modern innovation, the symposium charted a resilient and forward-looking science policy roadmap for Asia’s future.
