The InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) has been announced as a co-sponsor of the 2025 Next Generation for Biosecurity Competition, reinforcing its commitment to promoting responsible research practices and strengthening international biosecurity measures. The competition, officially launched on 18 March 2025 by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), aims to engage young professionals and emerging experts in addressing pressing biosecurity challenges.
Since its establishment of a Biosecurity Working Group in 2003, IAP has played a crucial role in linking scientific research with international biosecurity efforts, including collaborations with the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). In 2020, IAP restructured its Biosecurity Working Group (BWG) to include a diverse team of experts from 15 countries, ensuring a truly global perspective in addressing biosecurity risks.
The 2025 competition will see participants submit research papers that propose innovative biosecurity solutions. Key dates include an informational webinar on 3 April, a submission deadline on 13 July, and the announcement of winners in November. The winning paper will be presented at a side event at the BWC in December, providing a high-profile platform to showcase groundbreaking ideas.
As a co-sponsor, IAP will assist in disseminating the competition across its extensive global network to encourage broader participation, particularly from underrepresented regions. The organisation will also contribute to the judging process, ensuring rigorous academic and scientific scrutiny of submissions.
