Georgian Academy of Medical Sciences

The Georgian Academy of Medical Science was founded on 27.05.1994. The academy is a non-government organization and it was first alternative forms academy former Soviet Union Countries. The academy initially had 87 members, but 57 members passed away and today the academy consists of 30 members. The Academy has a statute and regulation on elections. The members are elected by private election with a direct blind method. The members are leaders in their specialty in Georgia and all of them work in University as full professors. The Academy has three departments in the form of theoretical, therapeutic and surgical medicine. The academy has a President, Vice-President and three co-chairs of departments, who are selected by private election and make the counsel of academy. Academy publishes periodical magazines such as the ”Georgian Medical News”, ”Critical Care &Catastrophe Medicine”, and “Georgian Surgery News”. Also every year, namely in spring and autumn, the academy conducts two scientific sessions and one or three scientific international symposiums in which participate leading scientists in medicine from USA, Russia, Japan, Germany, Egypt, Israel, Ukraine, Italy, Brazil, Tanzania, Philippines and other countries. Current President of the Academy is Professor Zurab Kheladze and the Vice-President is Professor Nodar Gogebashvili. Professor Omar Khardzeishvili is the Head of the Department of Theoretical Medicine, Professor Alexander Kistauri is the Head of the Department of Therapeutic Medicine and Professor Alexander Tsalugelashvili is the Head of the Department of Surgical Medicine. The members of academy support the development of medical sciences in Georgia, especially the preparation of young medical doctors and professors. Namely young doctors under the age of 40 with PHD academic diploma may be elected to the academy as associate members. The academy also aims at establishing and maintaining linkages with other countries and shares knowledge/achievements of the medical service in Georgia and makes popularization scientific achievements of Georgian medical doctors in medical science in other countries. The academy is a participant of science and health education projects in The Tbilisi State University after I. Javakhishvili, Tbilisi State Medical University, Critical Care Medicine Institute and other medical organizations of Georgia. The Academy represents a consulting-advisory body in state services in order to develop medical service in Georgia. The academy has contacts and collaborations with the office of the President of Georgia ,Parliament, Georgian Labor, Health and Social Effort Ministry and other government organizations in Georgia. In this case. The Academy provides advice to support the health care organization. Also the members of academy read public lectures in different issues of medicine. The academy has a connection with the magazines, with television, radio and other Georgian media area. The members of the academy periodically conduct receiving patients and treatment from different regions of Georgia by the way of charity. The academy tries to have contacts with medical centers and clinics in USA, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Japan, Egypt, Israel and other countries.
