The Conversation published an article by Peter McGrath Researcher, Biosciences, The InterAcademy Partnership, Nina Hobbhahn Researcher, Ecology, European Academies’ Science Advisory Council and Michael Norton Director, Environment Programme, European Academies’ Science Advisory Council. The article analyses the spread of neonicotinoid insecticides, their prohibition in Europe and their use in Africa.
The article presents the results of scientific studies showing the side effects of the use of neonicotinoids in agriculture and lists the various European decisions which have banned them in Europe: the initial partial ban and the comprehensive ban in 2018. Then it cites the report from the Network of African Sciences Academies (NASAC) which details the situation and issues relating to the agricultural context on the African continent, where neonicotinoids are still employed.
