The national science academies of the European member states, together with Academia Europea and ALLEA (All European Academies) formed a new independent body, the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) in 2001. Its aim is to provide authoritative scientific judgement to the policy makers of the European Union on a wide variety of topics, in particular in environment, energy, public health and agriculture. EASAC currently has a membership of 25 National Science Academies from the 27 EU member states, plus the National Science Academies of Norway, Switzerland and the UK, plus Academia Europaea and ALLEA.
